Year 6 - Amethyst and Magenta

Welcome to Year 6.

Our Teachers are Mrs Collins and Mrs Aitbenmoussa and our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Rimstad and Mrs Cheruvarthur.

16th October 2026

We have started reading a story called Rain Player this week.  Linking with our topic about the Maya Civilisation, the story is about Pik - a talented Pot-a-Tok player - who must play the Rain God, Chac, at the ball game in order to save his people from a terrible drought. We have explored the subjunctive mood by imagining what we would do, if we were an influential person in society.  In addition to this, we created posters to recruit flexible, capable and unshakeable players to join our Pok-a-Tok teams to defeat the deity.

In maths this week, we have been practising some problem solving.  Starting firstly with problems which involve starting at the end and working backwards, using the inverse to solve.  Although a little tricky to start, we managed to get the hang of it.  We also worked on sudoku and then tried applying some of the techniques to some SATs word problems.

In Music, we have been learning about the blues and from next week we will be writing our own blues songs to perform next term in the class assemblies.

Next week, we have Bikeability. Children are to come to school in appropriate clothing and walk their bikes into the playground, where a member of staff will direct them to a place to store their bike.

Homework:

In English, we have been putting together our informative leaflets about harmful substances.  Using the information that we have learnt in PSHE, the leaflets contain lots of facts, in eye-catching format, about the potential risks and dangers that alcohol, smoking and solvents can have on the body.

In art, we are putting together our projects about identity.  We are taking inspiration from an artist called Mike Barrett, who favours a layering technique.  Next week, we will look to add the final layers and some hidden messages about ourselves.  We look forward to displaying the final pieces in the coming weeks.

Homework:

  • Mayan masks are due on Friday 16th October
  • Maths quiz
  • SPAG - formal / informal
  • Reading x 3

Have a great weekend.

Languages Day was great fun.  We started the day with a whole school assembly and it was lovely to see the colours of so many different countries.  We have a visit from TingTing - a parent of our school who delivered a fascinating workshop in beginners Mandarin.

In science, we looked at the different components of blood.  By using different items to represent each component, the children ‘made’ blood.  We used yellow water to represent the plasma, cheerios and red food colouring as the red blood cells; marshmallows for the white blood cells and cotton wool to represent platelets.  The children also discussed the role that each component plays.

Next week, on Monday, we are lucky enough to have a Lego Coding workshop, which Mr Bushell has organised for us. After that, we will be having a first go at some past SATs papers.

Homework:

Maths  - TTRS Battle

Gramma Quiz - Determiners

Spellings - 10 sentences  and practice

This week has brought us to the end of our work on the ‘Three Little Pigs’ through the use of the Guardian’s award-winning advert.  We have written both formal and informal letters from different points of view and ended the week by organising a peaceful protest around whether the pigs or the wolf got what they deserved.

In maths, we have been looking at negative numbers, rounding and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1,000, which we will continue with next week.

In Science, we have carried out an in depth look at the blood vessels  and their functions as vital elements of the circulatory system.  We will continue in this vein (pun intended) when we look at the composition of blood in the coming weeks.

The Mayan number system was the focus of this week’s topic work - a system that works on base 20 and uses a mixture of symbols to represent different amounts. The children really enjoyed the challenge and some even asked if maths could be in Mayan numerals next week!

Homework:

Maths Quiz

Spellings - to write 10 sentences
